After our first collaboration with Clarissa Hulse was such a success, we couldn’t wait to team up together again and journey through another compelling adventure of bright colours and inspirational designs!

For CALLISTA, which means ‘most beautiful’ in Ancient Greek, we created an enticing and entrancing collection of wallpaper, woven fabrics and printed silks.

To celebrate this joyous collection, we have sat down with Clarissa to have a chat and discover the answers to those questions we’ve been dying to ask her!

If the designer inside of you is still shouting out questions for Clarissa after this read, follow @harlequinfw on Instagram to find Clarissa taking over our account on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September.

IndustryKnowHow Question1

It’s easy to see from my designs that I am constantly inspired by nature and plants. My mother used to love gardening and taught me the names of different plant species when I was a toddler, plonked in the flowerbed. Now I get my fix by walking in the countryside, either in the UK or while travelling with my family, where I collect and photograph plants to identify future designs. My design style is constantly developing – I think it’s really important not to get stagnant. Although I always use botanical imagery, I use it in different ways. I’m currently experimenting a lot with watercolours and chalks.

Question2

I’ve really enjoyed the resurgence of turmeric and mustard shades. It’s always been one of our best sellers but it’s really been everywhere recently! My next trend spot would be green. It’s a colour I used to avoid as I thought it looked a bit obvious with my designs but I’ve really got into the use of green as both a neutral and a statement by itself- there’s so many beautiful shades; moss, forest, grass and lime, and they all look great contrasting with other colours.

Question3

Find your look and stick to it. Don’t get too caught up in trends or be a slave to fashion- just design textiles that are beautiful and please you!

AboutYourWork Question4

I drew on old and new design ideas to create the CALLISTA collection. Most of my designs have been inspired by Greek and English landscapes and the plants I stumble upon with my camera- like the giant fennel, an acacia tree, ferns, reeds and grasses. There’s lots of ombré effects and painted watercolour lines reminding me of the sunsets and horizons that many of the plants are silhouetted against when I photograph them, and plenty of metallics in the form of gritty textures and reflective surfaces.

Question5

It’s difficult to choose! I do love the MEADOW GRASS wallpaper – the design is made up of several layers of grasses and it has a very elegant, almost Japanese, feel. The ocean and mimosa colourways are really vibrant shades of blue and yellow, which would make an incredible impact.

Question6

The AMAZILIA VELVETS are really special. I’m a big fan of velvet because it’s just so tactile but the almost liquid colour effect on this collection is so beautiful and different.

ClarissasWorld Question7

I have a young family so don’t have an awful lot of spare time! I do love photography. My perfect day would be prancing around the countryside with my camera taking photos of all the plants!

Question8

I’ve got a slightly scruffy old Victorian gilt mirror that my dad pulled out of a skip years ago. It’s seen better days but I still love it!

Question9

Comparison is the thief of joy.
